Ear Pinning/Otoplasty
Ears that "stick out” too far can create a poor self-image, starting at an early age. By the time children reach the age of seven or eight, some psychological damage may have already occurred as a result of ridicule by friends or classmates. It's for this reason the procedure to correct prominent ears, known as otoplasty (ear pinning), is often performed when children are under the age of seven. There is also strong demand for this surgery by older children and adults who may not have had the opportunity for this surgery at a younger age.
My Preferred Technique
My otoplasty operation is performed by exposing the cartilage framework of the ear, through an incision on the back surface of the ear, and reshaping the cartilage to achieve the desired repositioning, while maintaining a perfectly normal appearance.
This surgery can be performed either awake, under local anesthesia, or with the patient totally asleep, under general anesthesia. The surgical time is approximately one hour. Because it requires weeks of postoperative healing for the ears to regain full resiliency, patients are requested to avoid contact sports, rough play, etc. for at least a couple of months. |
